Therapy and Coaching Services for High-achieving, Overworked, and Overstressed Professionals.

Overworked and Overstressed?

You’re a professional. The person everyone turns to for answers. The right answers. Being that person carries a ton of responsibility. Being in charge means taking care of those you work for, those you work with, as well as your family. But, who takes care of you?

Brian: A Successful Attorney

Hired by his first choice of law firms right out of law school, Brian knew becoming partner would take 10 to 15 years and a lot of long hours. He made partner in nine.

For a litigator, arguing in the courtroom is nothing new. But, when Brian started coming to see me, his arguing had extended into the workplace as well as his home. The arguments with his wife were increasingly centered around his more frequent social drinking and his nightly nightcap of scotch.

“I feel terrible about some of the things I’ve said to my wife. It’s so hard for me to wind down after work. She used to understand, but now she just doesn’t get it.”

As far as Brian’s workplace behavior was concerned, one of the senior partners spoke with him about his aggressiveness in dealing with junior associates, administrative staff, and even the barista at the lobby coffee stand.

“I know my fuse is a little short sometimes. I’ve just been putting in a lot of hours.”

Brian’s doctor had recently prescribed Ambien for sleep as well as exercise to lose some weight. The Ambien left Brian feeling hungover, and his exercise was limited to the steps his Fitbit counted each day. Brian used to poke fun at the “rotund” litigators that he would see in and out of the courtroom. To his chagrin, he saw himself becoming “that guy.”

Brian told me he had always been a peak producer, but now he was less effective and his colleagues were starting to notice.

“I used to come to the office excited and ready to work. Now, the only thing I bring with me is exhaustion.”

Deep down, he knew that he should feel grateful for all that he had: an established career, a loving and supportive wife, three beautiful children, and a great network of friends and colleagues. Instead, he felt like a failure: drained, angry, depressed, embarrassed, and scared.  Brian wanted to feel like himself again, but he didn’t know where to start.

Sometimes Strength and Determination Aren’t Enough

I’m Matt McNeil. I’ve worked with many people just like you and Brian.

Like so many people, it’s not that what you’ve done in the past didn’t work. It’s just that it’s not working anymore. Working harder, having more willpower, or simply plowing through isn’t the solution. Most people think (professionals, in particular) that you just “put in a few more hours” or “just dig down a little more.”

I think you’ll agree with me when I say that it’s hard to give up a strategy that you’ve been using for years, even if you know it’s not working for you anymore. Sometimes what you need is a different perspective.

I’ve got a pretty good idea about some of the thoughts that are going through your head right now. Thoughts like: “I’m already juggling more than I can do. How can I possibly add anything else?” or “I’ve been making things work just fine for the last 20 years, so why isn’t it working now?”

And I’m positive you’re thinking, “What do I have to do to fix this, and how long is it going to take?”

Throughout my career, I’ve helped professionals in high-demand, high-liability, high-stress occupations that require long hours. I have developed several direct, specific, and targeted methods in assisting people just like you to obtain measurable and sustainable results.

I can show you how you can get more out of what you are already doing so that you don’t have to take more time away from home, your family or anything else you would like to be doing with that time.

Although Brian was apprehensive at first, he scheduled an appointment to see if therapy or coaching was something that could help him. During our work, he found strategies and developed insights.

His strong will and determination proved to be huge assets as he worked to return his life to normal utilizing both in-office and online appointments to accommodate his demanding schedule.

In therapy, Brian learned new strategies to help calm his temper with others and to sleep more soundly without the use of alcohol or prescription medication. Brian learned effective ways of communicating with his family, co-workers, and even his clients. He adopted new habits that supported a healthier, more vibrant lifestyle.

Through coaching, Brian developed insight into how he relied upon unhealthy and inefficient strategies for dealing with the high demands of his job. He learned more efficient methods of working, increasing his energy and dramatically raising his productivity.
